How it works

The mechanism in three steps, and where you can intervene.

🩸

Trigger

Autoimmune diseases (Graves disease), thyroid nodules, overdose of hormonal drugs.

🔄

Mechanism

Excess thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) speed up metabolism, increasing the load on the heart, nervous system and other organs.

💡

Symptom

Tachycardia, weight loss, sweating, anxiety, hand tremors, increased fatigue.

Is there marked fatigue?

Is stress high?

Likely causes

  • системные причины и дефицитные состояния
  • стресс-ассоциированные факторы

What to check

  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)
  • Free T3 and T4

Short answer

If hyperthyroidism is suspected, it is necessary to take tests for thyroid hormones (TSH, free T3 and T4) and consult an endocrinologist. It is important to monitor your hormone levels and symptoms using in-app tracking.

Your action plan

  1. Сдать базовые анализы: Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), Free T3 and T4, Antibodies to TSH receptors, General blood test
  2. Зафиксировать стартовые фото и симптомы в одном месте
  3. Через 8 недель сравнить динамику и скорректировать план с врачом

What lab tests to order

A baseline panel for the most common causes.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH)

TSH

The main marker of thyroid function. In hyperthyroidism, TSH levels are reduced.

Free T3 and T4

T3/T4

Shows the level of active thyroid hormones. In hyperthyroidism, their levels are elevated.

Antibodies to TSH receptors

TRAb

Helps diagnose Graves' disease, a common cause of hyperthyroidism.

General blood test

CBC

Assesses the general condition of the body and can detect anemia or inflammation.

Ultrasound of the thyroid gland

US

Allows you to identify nodes, increased volume of the gland or other structural changes.

Подробно

Causes of hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism most often develops due to the autoimmune disease Graves' disease, in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland. Other causes include toxic thyroid nodules (adenomas), subacute thyroiditis, or overdose of thyroxine medications. Less commonly, hyperthyroidism can be caused by pituitary tumors or excess iodine intake.

What tests should I take?

To diagnose hyperthyroidism, it is necessary to check the level of TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone), free T3 and T4. Additionally, antibody tests (TRAb, TPO), thyroid ultrasound and a complete blood count may be required. You can download analysis results into Axioris and track the dynamics of indicators in order to notice changes in time.

When to see a doctor

Consultation with an endocrinologist is necessary if symptoms of hyperthyroidism appear: rapid heartbeat, weight loss for no reason, hand tremors or increased anxiety. Urgent care is required for thyrotoxic crisis (temperature above 38°C, confusion, arrhythmia).

Common mistakes

Errors include self-diagnosis and taking medications without medical supervision, ignoring symptoms, or, conversely, excessive anxiety in case of minor deviations in tests. It is important not to confuse hyperthyroidism with panic attacks or VSD, as the symptoms can be similar.

Частые вопросы

Can hyperthyroidism go away on its own?

In rare cases, such as with subacute thyroiditis, thyroid function may be restored. However, most forms of hyperthyroidism (Graves disease, toxic nodes) require treatment by an endocrinologist.

How often should you get tested for hyperthyroidism?

The frequency depends on the severity of the condition and treatment. At the beginning of therapy, tests are taken every 4-6 weeks, then less frequently. In Axioris, you can set reminders for repeat tests.

Is it possible to exercise if you have hyperthyroidism?

Moderate exercise is possible after consultation with a doctor. Intense exercise should be avoided as it can increase tachycardia and strain on the heart.

Does hyperthyroidism affect mental status?

Yes, excess thyroid hormones can cause anxiety, irritability, and even panic attacks. These symptoms usually improve when hormone levels normalize.

How to track the dynamics of indicators?

In the Axioris application, you can download test results in PDF format, plot changes in TSH, T3 and T4, and mark symptoms for a comprehensive assessment of your condition.
